Interesting facts
What are food additives?
Food additives are substances added to improve the appearance, texture, taste, shelf life, or other properties of food. They can be both natural and synthetically produced and are widely used in various food products worldwide. Their purpose is to make food more appealing and safer for consumption over a longer period.
Are food additives safe?
In the European Union (including Latvia), all food additives are strictly tested and approved by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). However, some people choose to avoid certain additives, especially if they are sensitive to specific substances. It is always recommended to read product labels carefully and pay attention to the ingredients.
Types of food additives
There are several main types of food additives:
- Preservatives – extend the shelf life of products.
- Colorants – improve the visual appearance.
- Sweeteners – add extra sweetness.
- Emulsifiers, stabilizers, and thickeners – help achieve the desired texture.
- Flavorings – enhance or add aroma and taste.
Many of these additives are labeled with “E” numbers, for example, E100 – E999.
